Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

REQUIREMENTS
-------------

- a Roland JD-800 Programmable Synthesizer
- a computer (PC, MAC, etc.) with MIDI-interface
- at least 1 MIDI cable
- a program which can read SysEx SYX format (e.g. Dumpster for Windows)

PROGRAM TO READ .SYX FILES
---------------------------
I used Dumpster for Windows, which is very easy to handle and very simple in
its functions. It offers compatibility to CakeWalk Professional, and the most
important feature of it: IT WORKS. The only thing you need is a Windows PC, I
don't know if there are any MAC versions. You will find this tool pratically
anywhere in the web; it is public domain, so what are you waiting for.

I have experience problems though, when uploading single SYX files (patches) to
my JD-800. It only received half of the sound in most cases. Could not fix the
problem, but I have found a solution. If you have the same problem, simply
convert the SYX files to MID files and upload them with a MIDI sequencer which
is able to read and write system exclusive data.

Naturally, there are other tools for transferring SYX files to your synth. They
should also work with the files provided in this sound archive.

If you have problems reading SYX or if your sequencer or tool does not support
SYX files, please use the SYX2MIDI tool provided by Roland Corporation on their
site. Convert the files, then use a MIDI sequencer which supports system
exclusive (SysEx) messages.

UPLOAD PROCEDURE (For banks)
-----------------------------

1. connect the MIDI cables: computer MIDI-OUT to JD-800 MIDI IN
2. turn on computer and synth
3. start sysex tool (e.g. Dumpster)
4. select Exclusive to 1 in the JD-800 MIDI section
5. load the SYX file
6. send file to JD-800
7. push write on your JD-800 and select the location of the sound

FAQ
----

[SYX loader doesn't want to load the SYX files (using a MAC)]
- check the TYPE and CREATOR settings of the SYX

[No new sound on the JD-800 after sending]
- check the MIDI cables (please connect PC-MIDI-OUT and JD-800-MIDI-IN)
- check the tool settings (does it understand SYX files, MIDI channel, etc.)
- have you enable the exclusive function in the MIDI section of the JD-800 ?

[JD-800 does not completely load the sound]
I don't really know the reason for this. Best things to do is:
- try it again
- try another SYX uploader
- convert the files to MID files by using the SYX2MIDI tool, which you
can find at Roland Corporation site, and try again with a MIDI program that
supports SysEx information (e.g. sequencer, etc.)
- ask Brian Layzell for help (see link at my web site), for he is really
experienced in matters of MIDI and SYX
